Buffering with optical delay lines (ODLs) in optical packetswitching networks is a way to mitigate network contention. We study queueing models of ODLs in synchronous and asynchronous optical packet-switching networks under uniform Bernoulli traffic. We first introduce a Markov chain model for a finite-length ODL forward-buffering system in synchronized networks and calculate the stationary distribution of its queueing length as well as two important queueing parameters: packet loss rate (PLR) and average queueing delay (AQD). We then introduce an asymptotic analysis based on the generating function of an infinite buffering system and present approximate expressions for PLR and AQD. Numerical calculations demonstrate that these asymptotic estimates of PLR and AQD are quite accurate. We then extend the queueing analysis to feedback-buffering ODLs in synchronized networks. We present numerical calculations of PLRs and AQDs for feedback-buffering ODLs. Finally, we introduce queueing models in asynchronous networks for forward buffering or for feedback buffering without multiple recirculations. We carry out the asymptotic analysis to characterize the performance degradation of ODL buffering in asynchronous switching when the traffic load is high. © 2003 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Architecture and Analysis of Fast Packet Switches Based on Time-Multiplexed Photonic Fabrics
This paper proposes and evaluates two related fast packet switching architectures based on time-division multiplexed integrated photonic fabrics. The architectures are targeted towards low-latency inter-node switching and intra-node routing in high-speed networks. The inter-node switch achieves output packet queueing via asynchronous time-division multiplexing a strictly-nonblocking photonic fa...
متن کاملDimensioning shared-per-node recirculating fiber delay line buffers in an optical packet switch
Optical buffering based on fiber delay lines (FDLs) has been proposed as a means for contention resolution in an optical packet switch. In this article, we propose a queuing model for feedback-type shared-per-node recirculating FDL optical buffers in asynchronous optical switching nodes. In this model, optical packets are allowed to recirculate over FDLs as long as the total number of recircula...
متن کاملAsymptotic analysis for blocking probabilities of optical buffer with general packet-length distributions
Asynchronous optical packet switching seems to be suitable as a transport technology for the next-generation Internet due to the variable lengths of IP packets. Optical buffers in the output port are an integral part for solving contention by exploiting the time domain. Fiber delay lines (FDLs) are a well-known technique for achieving optical buffers. This work aims to give a highly accurate ap...
متن کاملDesign of Arrayed Waveguide Grating based Optical Switch for High Speed Optical Networks
This paper demonstrates the design of an Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) based optical switch. In the design both physical and network layer analysis is performed. The physical layer power and noise analysis is done to obtain Bit Error Rate (BER). This has been found that at the higher bit rates, BER is not affected with number of buffer modules. Network layer analysis is done to obtain perfor...
متن کاملMulti-wavelength switching in IP optical nodes adopting different buffering strategies
The paper addresses the topic of long-haul optical networking for the provision of large-bandwidth IP services. A class of optical packet switching architectures is considered which adopts an arrayed wavelength grating device as packet router. The architecture performs slotted packet switching operations and fully exploits the wavelength routing capabilities by allowing multi-wavelength switchi...
